It’s a British tradition. You get in from a busy day – you make a cup of tea. You’re caring for someone who has had bad news – you make a cup of tea. An unexpected rain shower on a hack has left you chilled to the bone? – you make a cup of tea. You can see a pattern emerging here!
Tea is the second-most popular drink in the world, after plain old water, and it’s safe to say that the UK drinks more than its fair share. British people drink around 2 to 3 cups per day, which means around 165 million cups across the UK… and that’s a whopping 60.2 billion cups of tea a year. No wonder we have a bit of a reputation in other countries for being a little bit tea obsessed…! But what you might not know is that tea can actually deliver some fantastic health benefits, so it’s a habit we strongly encourage here at Hooves & Love! Let’s take a quick look at them:
Tea is packed full of antioxidants All different types of tea, including humble English breakfast tea, contain antioxidants which help your cells to fight off damage from potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Some teas contain higher levels of antioxidants than others. If you’re looking for maximum health benefits from your cuppa, we’d advise you to choose green tea.
Tea can boost memory and concentration The winning combination of caffeine and L-Theanine, an amino acid found in tea, has been proven to improve memory and increase focus and concentration. Perfect for those days when you have oodles of admin to wade through. Or for when you’re practicing a dressage test or having a riding lesson.
Tea perks you up when you feel off colour Both peppermint and ginger teas are well worth having in your cupboard for days when you’re feeling a little bit under the weather. Peppermint tea is credited with relieving stomach cramps and aiding digestion. Ginger is effective in easing nausea and indigestion. And they’re both all-natural so you can cure your ills without the need for chemicals or a visit to the pharmacy.
Tea can help you unwind A study by the clever people at UCL found that tea can help cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone which makes skin age and leads us to layer on belly fat) spike less. The study, which was published in the medical journal Psychopharmacology, concluded that people who drank tea were able to de-stress more quickly than those who drank a fake tea substitute.
And the unproven benefits…!
Something which is harder to scientifically prove but that any true Brit will be able to confirm, is that just the process of brewing up a nice cup of tea can calm a worried mind. It’s a ritual that you can do with your eyes closed and it seems to help soothe and centre us when the world is a little bit crazy.
