Did you know that today, the 17th of February, is Random Acts of Kindness Day? I will admit it that it is a little bit better known in the US than here in the UK, but I think the principal behind it is so perfect for our strange and stressful lives at the moment. It’s a day when people try to ‘pay it forward’ and do something good for their friends, loved ones, family and even total strangers! That kindness can be something really tiny, like giving way for someone at a junction in your car, or a bigger gesture. Some people might pay for a stranger’s shopping in the supermarket or donate a sum of money to charity. Whatever you choose to do, the idea is that that person then ‘pays it forward’ with their own random act of kindness too.
With life at the moment being stressful, uncertain and for many, lonely, I think this particular awareness day is more relevant than ever before. We all know someone who is finding life tough thanks to the pandemic. Whether it’s a friend trying to juggle work with homeschooling their children or someone who lives on their own and finds the social isolation almost unbearable, it doesn’t take long to bring someone to mind, does it? It might even be an older person who lives nearby and is struggling without access to the support from neighbours or family that they previously relied on.
I love the idea of people setting out to do something which will put a smile on someone else’s face. A gesture, however small, which lets that person know you were thinking of them and wanted to make their day better. If you’ve ever been the unlucky recipient of a totally unexpected gift or bunch of flowers, you’ll know what I mean. The little thrill of excitement when you open the box or package having no idea who sent it or why! It really does make you feel oh-so warm and fuzzy inside. Even if your parcel is expected, for example it’s your birthday or you’ve just moved to a new house, a personal touch makes such a big difference.
When I first founded Hooves & Love, I wanted to make sure that there was a personal element to everything I did. I was aiming to create a place where people could buy gorgeous gifts for horse lovers which had been hand-selected for their quality and provenance. The gift boxes had to be carefully wrapped in a beautiful box and include a hand-written, personalised note. I later decided to make it possible for people to ‘create their own’ boxes, by picking and choosing what they thought their loved one would want most of all from the different jewellery, clutch bags, candles, soft and cosy scarves, socks, bathroom products and even chocolate I’ve gathered together. The addition of gifts which themselves could be personalised took this a step further, such as the beautiful grooming kits which are proving so popular with you all. Then, last year, I added the option for customers to personalise the boxes to!
The wonderful feedback I get from happy recipients of Hooves & Love gift boxes is testament to the demand for something personal and touching to send someone. I hope what I do is something a little bit different from other gift websites out there, and perhaps you might even find the perfect gift box to send someone you miss as a small (and random!) act of kindness?
